  • The University of Kentucky: academic programs, leading research and 8 NCAA National Championships

Thank you to The University of Kentucky (UK) for the interview so that we could learn more about UK. This interview also shares the most commonly asked questions that The University of Kentucky receives from Canadian students and Guidance Counsellors, and, what makes The University of Kentucky unique.

Here's what they shared with us:

The University of Kentucky (UK) is the flagship university of the state of Kentucky. A leading public research university that is nationally and internationally ranked in a number of programs, UK is on an exciting path—one that’s conducting groundbreaking research in areas such as energy, the environment, and cancer—yet remains one of the most affordable major universities in the United States.

Research is at the heart of UK’s teachings, addressing key challenges in areas like health and quality of life. With over 200 academic programs in different colleges, UK is a hub of world-class academics, offering our undergraduates many opportunities to become involved with research no matter their field of study. At UK, our students learn and work alongside world-renown professors who are seeking to address some of the world’s most pressing issues.

What's the number one question you are asked by Canadian students, parents, high school counsellors and athletic coaches (and a short answer):

Q: Are there scholarships available for international students?

A: Yes! We have several scholarship opportunities for both incoming freshmen and transfer students. And yes, it is possible to receive more than one scholarship :). Our International Ambassador Scholarship is a program that is very unique to UK; our International Ambassadors work with the International Center and are available to answer any questions prospective students may have about life as a UK student, academics, housing, etc. as well as share what it’s like to live in the welcoming city of Lexington, KY.

How do you support/assist Canadian/international students who are looking at applying and attending your university/college?

Our staff at the University of Kentucky International Center is dedicated to helping all future Wildcats through every stage in the application process, whether this is questions about necessary documents, admissions requirements, academic programs, or visa issues—we’ll get back to you quickly, and someone will always be able to answer your questions!

That support doesn’t end after you arrive on campus. Your UK experience will start with International Orientation Week before the semester begins, where we’ll help you find your way around campus, give you all the information you’ll need to get started, and you’ll have plenty of time to make new friendships.

After Orientation Week, the International Center staff—and your fellow international students—are always here to help you get adjusted to life in Lexington. Questions about your schedule, housing, transportation, where to eat, how to get involved in extracurriculars or clubs? We’ve got answers!

What's something unique about your college/university that people may not know:

UK leads the nation in NBA players! Our amazing men’s basketball program, winner of 8 NCAA National Championships, means former Kentucky players, like Anthony Davis, John Wall, and DeMarcus Cousins, are some of the most recognized players in the league. It also means that UK students get to see NBA-level games right on campus at discounted student prices and experience a one-of-a-kind school spirit!
